In 1942-3 there was a concentration camp established on the island of Rab (Arbe in Italian) immediately after conquest of it by Italian forces. There were arrested civilians including members of Partisan resistance in Ljubljana. Number of detainees oscilated between 10 to 15 thousand. It is estimated that 2000 - 3500 people died in the camp due to one of the worst conditions in camps overall.
After dismissing Mussolini as a prime minister prisoners were rescued by Yugoslavian partisans but it is said that few hundreds did not managed to escape and were moved to Auschwitz by arriving Nazis.
Today you can visit Memorial Cemetery Kampor to pay tribute to casualities.
